Why I Want To Be Your County Clerk
A lot of people have asked me why I decided to run for Macomb County Clerk.
Macomb County Clerk and Register Deeds is a big job. Almost 1 million people call Macomb home. You deserve to know that your elections will be run right and your County Clerk cares about making it easier to vote. Your time is valuable and you shouldn't have to wait in long lines for your birth certificate or legal records.
You deserve a Clerk's Office that works again after the dysfunction of the last two years.
It was a big decision for me to decide to seek the Macomb County Clerk position. As you know, I was running for Congress. When I would talk to voters, the chaos in the Clerk's Office came up again and again. After Karen Spranger was finally removed by the courts in March, many Democrats approached me to run for Clerk.
At first, I turned them down. I was proud of our grassroots campaign for Congress. I had always wanted to be the kind of dedicated congressman that Sandy Levin has been for Southeast Michigan. Public service is very important to me. I have always known that I work for you. It meant the world to me to have so many local leaders, activists and unions stand by me. I would never want to let anyone down.
In the weeks that followed, people kept telling me how concerned they were about the Clerk's Office. They felt let down by their government. And I had to step back and think about how I could best serve the people who had put their faith in me and elected me over the years.
I thought a lot about my good friend Gretchen Whitmer, who I served with in the House and Senate for many years. When the Ingham County Prosecutor’s Office was plagued by scandal in 2016, she stepped in as interim Prosecutor and helped right the ship.
I believe that the Macomb County Clerk’s Office needs that kind of steady hand right now.
I believe that the best way that I can serve Macomb County — and everyone who has supported me over the years — is to take on the challenge of running for Clerk and Register of Deeds.
I was born and raised in Michigan. I have lived in Macomb County for nearly all my life. I won't stand by as our Clerk’s Office, which was once a model of efficiency and innovation for the entire state of Michigan, has been torn apart by corruption and scandal over the last two years.
The Macomb County Clerk’s Office has an incredible staff. They are highly dedicated to getting the job done. My top priority is restoring sensibility and integrity to the Office and help them make Macomb County a place they are proud of.
Sponsoring tougher ethics laws, ending gerrymandering, and expanding voting rights have always been top priorities for me as a State Senator and Representative. These aren't new fights for me. And you have my word that I will carry on that fight every day as Macomb County Clerk and Register of Deeds.
