Reforming Ethics, Campaign Finance, and Gerrymandering
Holding Officials to the Highest Ethical Standards
When Karen Spranger was Macomb County Clerk, she was fined by the county ethics board. Steve believes that candidates and elected officials should be held to the highest standard and must lead by example. In the Michigan Legislature, he has always fought to hold officials accountable to the people who elected them. He knows that he works for you.
In 2007, he finally convinced his colleagues to pass the landmark law requiring legal defense funds to disclose their donors after the Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick scandal. This was called the most important piece of Michigan ethics legislation in the last 20 years.
As Macomb County Clerk, Steve will champion stronger ethics reforms to restore trust, honor and integrity.
Stopping Conflicts of Interest
The Clerk's Office was tarnished by Karen Spranger. Citizens deserve to know if politicians have conflicts of interest. Michigan is one of only two states in the country not to require candidate financial disclosures and Steve has led the fight against this in the Legislature.
In the House and Senate, Steve has introduced seven bills since 2003 requiring candidates to release their personal finances and any conflicts of interest they have. He sponsored legislation requiring presidential candidates to release their last five tax returns in order to qualify for the Michigan ballot.
As Macomb County Clerk, Steve will push for more transparency and accountability from politicians at every level of government.
Leading on Campaign Finance Reform
We need campaign finance reform now. Citizens United is a travesty. The 2010 U.S. Supreme Court decision must be overturned. We need to get money out of politics so that all politicians start representing people, not lobbyists and corporations.
Steve has voted against legislation allowing more dark money in politics. He sponsored a 2016 resolution calling for a constitutional convention to propose amendments to undo the damage of Citizens United.
Steve will continue to fight for more transparency in political fundraising and for real campaign finance reform.
Making Officials Accountable to FOIA
You deserve to know what your government is up to. Steve has been a champion of expanding your right to know under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).
Steve has consistently introduced legislation to open up the Legislature and Governor's Office to FOIA during his time in the House and Senate.
As Macomb County Clerk, Steve will champion FOIA and the public's right to know.
Michigan is one of the most gerrymandered states in the country. It doesn’t make any sense for politicians to draw political districts and pick their voters. Voters should pick their representatives, not the other way around. Steve supports nonpartisan redistricting reforms.
In the Legislature, Steve has introduced legislation establishing an independent redistricting commission in Michigan to help eliminate partisan bias. Steve was also an early supporter of the 2018 “Voters not Politicians” ballot initiative to create an independent redistricting commission in Michigan.
Steve will fight for fairness in Macomb County's next redistricting process.
