WARREN, MI — Just days after State Senator Steve Bieda (D-Warren) announced he will seek the Democratic nomination for Macomb County Clerk and Register of Deeds in August 2018, 26 Macomb leaders from all across the county have rallied to his campaign.

Bieda has vowed that he will restore honor and integrity to the Clerk’s Office after a judge last month removed Karen Spranger as Clerk. In his more than 13 years serving in the Michigan House and Senate, Bieda has been a leader on holding politicians to high ethical standards, fighting against gerrymandering, and protecting and strengthening the right to vote. Bieda was named MIRS’ 2017 “Michigan Democrat of the Year.”

“Steve Bieda is the only candidate who can return dignity and sensibility to the Clerk’s office after the last two years of turmoil and backroom dirty deals. I’ve worked with him for many years on public safety issues, and there is no one I would rather have as Macomb County Clerk than Steve Bieda,” said Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham.

As Macomb County Clerk and Register of Deeds, Bieda will:

  • Restore honor and integrity to the Clerk’s Office

  • Lead with real reforms, including strengthening ethics legislation for public officials, campaign finance reform, and ending gerrymandering

  • Protect voting rights and expand access to the ballot

  • Help veterans and families facing foreclosure to keep their homes

“For myself, as a voter, there is no one more involved and more connected to our community than Steve Bieda. Steve grew up here in Warren, went to public schools here, and has never forgotten where he comes from. I’ve been proud to work with Steve on trying to fix our crumbling roads, protecting animals, and fighting to expand voting rights with automatic registration. He’s someone who knows how to get things done. And that’s exactly what we need from our next Macomb County Clerk after the last two years of dysfunction,” said State Representative Patrick Green (D-Warren).

In 2007, Bieda finally convinced his colleagues to pass the landmark law requiring legal defense funds to disclose their donors after the Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick scandal. This was called the most important piece of Michigan ethics legislation in the last 20 years. In the Michigan Legislature, Bieda has personally sponsored and passed more than 50 bills and public acts, in addition to co-sponsoring hundreds of others.

“I have been overwhelmed by the support for my campaign for Macomb County Clerk and Register of Deeds from all across the county. People are yearning for change after two years of chaos in the Clerk’s Office. I pledge to bring back honesty and integrity to the office where so many dedicated people work. And I will fight to strengthen ethics, end gerrymandering, help those facing foreclosure, and make it easier to vote,” said State Senator Steve Bieda (D-Warren).
