Steve Bieda Announces Campaign for Macomb County Clerk/Register of Deeds To Restore Honesty and Integrity after Two Years of Turmoil

Democrat Has Been a Longtime Leader in Ethics Reform, Ending Gerrymandering, and Voting Rights

WARREN, MI — State Senator Steve Bieda (D-Warren) today announced he will seek the Democratic nomination on August 7, 2018 for Macomb County Clerk and Register of Deeds, a position that is vacant due to the courts removing Clerk Karen Spranger from office last month. Bieda vowed that he will return dignity to the Clerk’s Office after two years of turmoil.

Spranger was ousted after a judge ruled she did not live in Macomb County when she was elected as a Republican in 2016. For the last two years, Macomb County has endured one controversy after another in the Clerk’s Office, as Spranger was under multiple criminal investigations and was fined by the Macomb County ethics board. She totaled her county car and an employee accused her of assault.

In his more than 13 years serving in the Michigan House and Senate, Bieda has been a leader on holding politicians to high ethical standards, fighting against gerrymandering, and protecting and strengthening the right to vote. Bieda was named MIRS’ 2017 “Michigan Democrat of the Year.”

“I have lived in Macomb County nearly all my life. It was not an easy decision to end my campaign for Congress. But I cannot stand by as our Clerk’s Office, which was once a model of efficiency and innovation for the entire state of Michigan, has been torn apart by corruption and scandal over the last two years. Ethics reform, ending gerrymandering, and voting rights have always been top priorities for me as a State Senator and Representative. And I will carry on that fight every day as Macomb County Clerk and Register of Deeds,” said Senator Steve Bieda (D-Warren).

“The Macomb County Clerk’s Office has an incredible staff that is highly dedicated to getting the job done. I want to help restore sensibility and integrity to the Office and help them make Macomb County a place they are proud of,” Bieda added.

In the Michigan Legislature, Bieda has personally sponsored and passed more than 50 bills and public acts, in addition to co-sponsoring hundreds of others. In 2007, Bieda finally convinced his colleagues to pass the landmark law requiring legal defense funds to disclose their donors after the Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick scandal. This was called the most important piece of Michigan ethics legislation in the last 20 years.

As Macomb County Clerk and Register of Deeds, Bieda vows to:

  • Restore honor and integrity to the Clerk’s Office

  • Lead with real reforms, including strengthening ethics legislation for public officials, campaign finance reform, and ending gerrymandering

  • Protect voting rights and expand access to the ballot

  • Help veterans and families facing foreclosure to keep their homes

Bieda currently represents the 9th State Senate District that includes the communities of Center Line, Eastpointe, Fraser, Roseville, Warren, and a portion of Clinton Township, and has been a State Senator since 2011. From 2003 to 2008, Bieda served as State Representative for the 25th State House District, representing Warren and Sterling Heights.
